Now worth $2.2 billion, Tom Gores is chairman and CEO of Platinum Equity, a Los Angeles-based merger and acquisition firm. Originally from Israel, Tom grew up in Michigan. To pay for his studies in Michigan State University, he accepted jobs as janitor and telemarketer. He eventually graduated with a degree in real estate finance, after which he founded a lumber software firm. With his elder brother Alec, he began investing in startup operations while learning about buyouts and acquisitions. In 1995, Tom founded Platinum Equity. Since then, the company has orchestrated more than 100 acquisitions.
